Kelimutu Lakes

Kelimutu to Larantuka

After Bajawa we spent a few days in the nearby town Baowae in order to climb the local volcano and then moved on to Kelimutu. This natural wonder is a series of three volcanic lakes of different colors. From the town of Moni we hiked to the lakes, touring the local villages and enjoying their fields and plantations. When we arrived, around noon, the other tourists had left and we could admire the three lakes by ourselves in the brilliant sunlight. One lake was black, one brown (“coca-cola”) and one turquoise-green. On the way down we found a swimming pool with a waterfall for cooling off. After Kelimutu we continued eastwards to the very end of Flores via Ende and Maumere to Larantuka. Along the road from Maumere to Larantuka we began to see Christian graves built next to houses, as if the living wished to have their ancestors nearby in case of need. Later in Indonesia we would see the same, but with Moslem graves, in South Kalimantan.
