Sunset in the Togean islands

Togean Islands

The Togeans are a chain of small, forested islands, surrounded by barrier and fringing reefs, in the middle of the large sea enclosed on three sides by the Sulawesi mainland. We decided to visit Malenge, one of the outer islands. We stayed in a small beachside shack on the far side of the island, in a place only accessible by boat. Our hosts provided food and fresh water, just enough to last us until the next visit, and then left us, “deserted”, on the isolated beach. Accommodation was basic: a simple cabin with two beds and an oil lamp, but no electricity, bathroom, running water, or shower.

We were alone on a beautiful white beach with palm trees and clear blue water, with no neighbors. Snorkeling was excellent right in front of the cabin. The water was calm enough that it was possible to swim out into the ocean to explore the nearby reefs. Monkeys would come down to steal coconuts in the evening, and there were crabs to play with at dawn. At night there were plenty of stars in the sky to admire. Here we spent a few days relaxing and doing nothing in particular: a perfect holiday from our hard-traveling lifestyle.
