Khorat and Phimai
There are more Khmer sites in Isan than in Cambodia! From Khorat we visited Phimai, a beautifully restored Khmer temple with a striking lotus-bud tower. The site would be impressive on its own, but tame compared to Angkor. Nearby is the largest banyan tree in Thailand - strictly a local tourist attraction! The “tree” is more like a small forest. From Khorat we headed north, across the hot, dry plains, to Nong Khai, on the border with Laos. Though it was the beginning of March, the heat was already scorching.
